Historical Information

Adopted 10 April 1979. The colours of the flag are those of the flag of Portugal from 1830 to 1911; in the canton is a shield with the arms of Portugal. The goshawk (acor in Portugese) refers to the name of the islands. The nine stars represent the islands of Flores, Corvo, Terceira, Sao Jorge, Pico, Faial, Graciosa, Sao Miguel and Santa Maria.
