Historical Information

Adopted 27 August 1847. The design of the flag copies that of the United States, from where since 1822 freed slaves came to settle in Liberia. the white star represents the shining light of the new republic in the dark continent, represented by a blue square. the 11 stripes symbolize the 11 signatories of the Liberian Declaration of Independence.
