Historical Information
Adopted 6 February 1996. The Ethiopian horizontal tri-colour dates back to c.1895. In 1996 the new national emblem was placed in the centre of the flag. The blue symbolizes peace and the pentagram represents the unity of the nations, nationalities and the peoples of Ethiopia. The original symbolism of the colours denoted the Christian virtues. In the present official symbolism the green represent fertility, labour and development; the yellow, hope, justice and equality, and the red, sacrifice and heroism in the cause of freedom and equality.
