Historical Information

Introduced in the present form 12 June 1845, adopted 16 August 1972. It is only coincidence that this flag is so similar to that of the Netherlands. The colours of the national flag of Luxembourg are those of the arms (red lion, white and blue stripes). Note the lighter shade of blue. An armorial banner has been in use since 1853 as the flag of the Army, and since 1972 as the flag of inland shipping and civil aviation.
